Groenewegen powers to Valencia victory as Haig claims overall lead

Madrid, Spain: Dutch sprinter Dylan Groenewegen survived a crash to win the third stage of the Tour of Valencia on Friday, while Australian Jack Haig snatched the overall lead from Slovenian Tadej Pogacar.

Groenewegen, who rides for Jumbo-Visma and also won the first stage on Wednesday, again held off his compatriot Fabio Jakobsen (Deceunink-Quick Step) and Slovenian Matej Mohoric (Bahrain).

Pogacar (UAE), who had taken the lead in the general classification on Tuesday, dropped to second behind Haig of Mitchelton-Scott, with Spain's Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) in third. They are part of a group of six riders on the same aggregate time.

The flat stage three between Orihuela and Torrevieja was decided by a dramatic sprint to the line and Groenewegen did well to recover after falling with 30km to go.

The fourth stage between Calpe and Altea on Saturday will include 2,884 metres of climbing before finishing with a 5km ascent.
