DOHA: Al Arabi picked up three important points after they overcame Al Shahania 2-1 in the 17th round match at the QNB Stars League here on Thursday.
Wilfried Bony scored the opening goal in the seventh minute with a left-footed drive from close range.
However, the euphoria didn’t last long as Shahania found the equalizer following a quick counter-attack in the 29th minute when Yousef Hani capitalized on a misclearance by Arabi keeper.
But Arabi was quick to regain the lead a minute later when Iranian Morteza Pouraliganji headed home a corner kick.
The match also witnessed a flurry of yellow cards as players from both sides got booked for rough tackles. Arabi’s Victor Vazquez (19) and Al Shahania trio Saad Hussain (29), Alvaro Perez (59) and Luciano Vazquez (79) were booked.
Arabi keeper Mahmoud Abunada was booked in the 80th followed by Yusuf Abdurisag a minute later.
Al Sailiya edge past Al Ahli 1-0
Abdulqadir Ilyas scored the only goal in the second minute to help Al Sailiya beat Al Ahli in the evening’s another match.
Sailiya opened the scoring after a lapse by Ahli keeper Ivanildo Rodrigues after Nadir Belhadj charged down the left before slipping in a cross to Rachid Tiberkanine, who took a firm shot at the goal.
While the Ahli keeper fumbled to control the ball, Ilyas, who was lurking inside the box, banged it home much to the delight of his team-mates.
