IT IS OFFICIAL. Khalil Ahmed Al Mohannadi announced his candidature for the International Table Tennis Federation’s (ITTF) presidential election last week.
The Qatar Table Tennis Association (QTTA) chief is presently a vice-president of the world governing body.
The election will be held on May 31 in Dusseldorf, Germany, with incumbent Thomas Weikert also in the fray.
The deadline to submit nominations is April 30.
Al Mohannadi, who became the QTTA president in 1995, said, “I’m proud that the QTTA made huge progress in terms of the sport’s development and has become one of the leading organisers of top-level competitions.”
During his tenure, Qatar hosted World Team Championships in 2004, the ITTF World Tour Qatar Open since 1994, 2012 London Olympics qualifiers and, most recently, ITTF Star Award and ITTF World Tour Grand Finals last December.
As part of his election campaign, Al Mohannadi has proposed to attract title sponsors for all world events, make the eligibility rule for all international competitions the same as the regulations required for the Olympic Games and bring transparency in financial dealings.
