QATAR Stars League champions Al Rayyan extended the contract of captain Rodrigo Tabata for another two years, tying him to the club until 2020.
The Brazil-born Qatar international, arguably one of the club’s most successful signings ever, is currently their top scorer in the Qatar Stars League, with 16 goals.
The 36-year-old’s contract extension came at a time when in-form Rayyan look to finish the domestic season on a strong note and make it to the ongoing AFC Champions League’s knockout stages.
Tabata had helped Rayyan regain the league shield last season after a gap of two decades and bagged two prestigious end-of-season awards for the best player and top scorer, which he shared with El Jaish’s Abderrazak Hamdallah.
Qatar national team coach Jorge Fossati, who knows Tabata from his Rayyan days, will hope his contract extension makes him deliver inspiring performances in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Iran and Uzbekistan.
Tabata, who joined from Turkish club Besiktas in January, 2011, has won several titles, including the Emir’s Cup in 2012 and 2013.
