Doha: Al Sadd bounced back to pick up three important points in their 4-1 win over Umm Salal in a eighth round match here on Sunday.
Sadd captain Xavi Hernandez produced a stunning free-kick to equalise the score in the 39th minute for his third goal of the season after Jugurtha Hamroun own-goal in the ninth minute almost dislodged the 2012-13 champions after the Algerian international’s misdirected header landed into the goal.
"The match was very difficult. Umm Salal are a physically strong side and played with a lot of punch. The first 20 minutes wasn't ok, but the team improved after that," said Sadd coach Jesualdo Fereira. "We got a good win and three important points. I'm also happy that 18-year old Ahmed Sohail debuted and had a great game."
Striker Baghdad Bounedjah, who missed a couple of close chances, earned the lead in the 52nd courtesy a spot-kick after Hassan Al Haidous was brought down by an opponent defender.
Morteza Pouraliganji headed home a corner in the 84th while Hamroun compensated with a 89th-minute strike from a goal-mouth melee.
Sadd next take on Al Duhail while Umm Salal play Qatar SC in the ninth-round.
