Doha: Qatar’s Al Sadd defeated Sydney University Handball Club 27-22 at Duhail Sports Hall on Tuesday to book their place in the semifinal of the IHF Super Globe.
Sadd failed to find their rhythm in the first half against the Sydney side, who they have faced at the event every year since 2012 as the scores were level (13-13) at half-time. But the Qataris put in a much-improved show then on to register yet another victory over their traditional rivals in the competition.
Goalkeeper Yussuf Rasheed made some critical saves as Sadd took the game away from their rivals.
Sadd will now take on German side Füchse Berlin, who defeated Brazil’s Taubate 33-25.
Meanwhile, reigning champions Barcelona booked their berth in the last four with a 37-28 victory against Bahrain’s Al Najma.
The Spaniards will take on Montpellier in the semifinal after the French side defeated Tunisia’s Hammamet 31-22.
