Doha: Qatar’s Al Sadd defeated Australia’s Sydney Uni Club 33-25 in the IHF Super Globe quarterfinals to set up a clash with defending champions Fuchse Berlin of Germany in the last four at the Duhail Handball Stadium on Saturday.
Earlier, the German side started their title defence with a hard-earned 33-31 win over Brazil’s Esporte Clube Pinheiros.
The match will start at 7pm.
Boasted by the presence of world championship silver medallists Danijel Saric and Abdulla Al Karbi, Sadd will now have to put in that extra effort to avenge their last year’s semifinal loss to Berlin.
Just like Berlin, Sadd can count on a deep squad, though perhaps the biggest threat to the European team’s chances is the superb goalkeeper Danijel Saric.
The Australian side kept up the pace through the opening 10 minutes. Though the visitors trailed by three goals after five minutes (1-4), the six-time Oceania winners regained composure and closed the gap to two by the time the clock showed 10 minutes.
However, Sadd remained in control with a steady two to three-goal lead for some minutes and created a more decisive advantage of three goals at the 20th minute mark.
