HOLDERS Al Sadd started their Emir’s Cup campaign on a confident note last week, winning both their matches to lead Group A.
The four-time champions overcame Al Rayyan 3-2 in their first match before cruising past Al Ahli 3-1 at the Qatar Table Tennis Association Training Centre.
Al Khor and Qatar Sports Club are the other teams in the group.
“We had a difficult match against Rayyan. It was a close one. We’re happy to prevail over them in the end,” said Sadd’s Hungarian coach Ferenc Fischer.
“The boys have so far showed the kind of form expected of them and we’re determined to retain the title,” he added.
Last year’s runners-up Al Arabi too had a great start when they won both their matches in Group B.
Arabi, who defeated Al Gharafa and Al Wakrah, looked set to book their semifinal berth from the group along with Jaish, who won against Al Shamal and Al Gharafa.
The top two teams from each group will qualify for Friday’s semifinals while the final is on May 1.
