Doha, Qatar: Hosts Aspire Academy defeated Suwon Samsung of South Korea in the opening match of the ninth edition of the Al Kass International Cup at Aspire Grounds in Doha on Thursday.
Suwon took the lead through captain Seongho Lee, whose header off a cross from Hyeongpin Lee sailed defeated Aspire goalkeeper Amir Katoul hands down.
But the Qatari boys drew level in the30th minute when Yousef Elkhatib's low right-footer, after Jassem Alsharshani’s initial shot came off the post, gave the Korean goalkeeper no chance.
Mohamed Surag gave them the lead in the 52nd minute and they sealed the game three minutes from time when substitute Abdulaziz Al Naimi's free-kick from the left sneaked home.
Aspire striker Mahdi Almejaba was chosen as the Most Valuable Player of the match and received the award from Qatar coach Felix Sanchez.
Aspire will take on reigning champions Rangers in their next match on Monday.
