Aspire gears up for 2nd IAU 50km Championship

DOHA: Preparations are in full swing at Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF) to host the Second International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) 50km Championship, to be held on November 11. The championship is officially accredited by the IAU and hosted by AZF annually from 2015 through to 2017.

Featuring more than 100 of the world’s best ultrarunners, as selected by their respective national federations, strong competition is expected for the championship that offers three categories for males, females and group competitions.

Commenting on hosting the event, Abdullah Al Khater, Event Manager at Aspire Zone Foundation, said: “To host such international championship for three consecutive years is a clear indicator on IAU’s trust in AZF’s capacity to organise international events. IAU relies heavily on our organisational capabilities, world-class facilities and experts in this. We will honour this trust as we promise to deliver a successful event that live up to AZF and Qatar’s reputation in organising sporting events, and to the esteemed position of IAU”.

Aspire International 6:50 Race is back

In parallel, AZF will also host the fourth edition of the “Aspire International 6:50Race” which takes place during the IAU international race. This unique event gives local enthusiasts the opportunity to run alongside IAU professional ultrarunners. The Aspire International 6:50KM is a 50km Individual Run Race with Team Relay (5 persons) designed in Multi Lap format. The challenge is to run 50KM within 6 hours. The event will count an athlete village where participants can check in for its race, warm up, cool down meet up with the organizers, media and other participants.

A redesigned race course

The race course comprises tarmac, tile and paved road. It is closed to traffic and features drink stations and food per loop. The race will be run in the evening but the course will be well lit. In essence, this should be quite a fast course with little gradient change and most turns being wide in nature. Drink stations will also be located to the right of the course and will offer; beverages and snacks for participants.

Final list of stars to be announced soon

With the registration to close soon, Aspire Zone Foundation will announce the final list of international athletes participating at the IAU 50Km championship. The previous version has witnessed a remarkable turnout with more than 200 participants. This reflects clearly the international trust in AZF skilled team and world-class facilities as an ideal location to hold the event for three consecutive years.
