AL RAYYAN will get a great opportunity to defend the title at home at the 36th GCC Clubs Championship to be held at the Ali bin Hamad Al Attiyah Arena from March 6 to 18.
This is for the first time that the arena is hosting a major volleyball event.
Three-time champions Rayyan had defeated Al Arabi in straight sets in last year’s final in Oman and are set to renew their rivalry with their local competitors at the regional competition.
Rayyan are two-time defending champions while Arabi last won it in 2010, when the tournament was held in Muscat, Oman.
The duo have been engaged in some of the most compelling duels in the Qatar League and this season was no different, with the former winning a five-set thriller at the latter’s backyard in the first phase.
The last time Qatar hosted the GCC Clubs Championship was in 2011 when Rayyan won their maiden title, beating Bahrain’s Al Muharraq SC 3-1 at their own backyard.
Incidentally, Muharraq are the most successful club in the championship history, having won it 10 times.
