LEKHWIYA beat Al Gharafa 25-17 in the Qatar League last week to extend their stay among the top three teams.
In a tough week in which most teams had to play two matches due to heavy backlog of postponed fixtures, Lekhwiya had it easy against Gharafa, who were led by national team captain Abdulrazzaq Murad.
Though the league had started in September, it took a three-month break in October due to the national team’s preparations for the World Championship and resumed only in the second week of February, forcing the clubs to play back-to-back games.
In the match played at the Qatar Handball Association Hall, both teams were level 11-11 at half-time before Lekhwiya upped the ante.
Wajdi Sinen and Mario Vuglac did the bulk of scoring for Lekhwiya, the runners-up last season.
Earlier, they were held 29-29 by El Quiyada.
As the league reached its half-way mark, Lekhwiya are third with 27 points from 11 games. Al Rayyan, also on 27, are second on goal difference.
Meanwhile, champions El Jaish maintained their stay on top with a 29-23 win against Rayyan. This followed their 29-25 victory against Al Ahli.
The Armymen have 28 points and have lost just one match (19-21 to Al Wakrah), and once again look the team to beat.
