Olympic silver medallist Zhang Jike of China pulled out of the World Tour Grand Finals citing a foot injury.

The 28-year-old, who had lost 0-4 to compatriot Ma Long in the Rio Games final, is nowhere near his best after winning gold at the 2012 London Games.

He also skipped this year’s Chinese Super League, one of the strongest competitions in the world.

Current world No.4 Zhang, who became the fourth player in the world to complete a Grand Slam which includes the Olympics, World Championships and World Cup, still have plenty to offer, but the rigours of international competition and sky-high expectations are definitely taking its toll on him.

Ma, Sweden’s Jan-Ove Waldner (1992), China’s Liu Guoliang (1999) and Kong Linghui (2000) are the other players to have won a Grand Slam.
