Humble start to being popular

THE Al Adaid Desert Challenge, earlier known as ‘Inland Sea Traverse’, was started by cycling group Qatar Chain Reaction in 2010.

It was run with a minimal budget and was mostly a volunteer-based competition, with friends and families chipping in with their support.

The Qatar Cyclists (QC), which is now the tournament’s main organiser, provided logistics support for its 2015 edition. The QC realised that the event was truly unique and hence offered to undertake its concept and management.

“It was rebranded and renamed as Al Adaid Desert Challenge last year and became one of the top off-road events in the region,” said QC Director Dr Abdulaziz Al Kuwari.

Around 130 riders completed the race in the inaugural edition last year.

This time, there will also be an informal event for kids in the age group of seven to 15 at the finish line.

“You’re never too young to start. We want to encourage all to be a part of the bicycle lifestyle,” added Al Kuwari.
