Doha: Coach Valero Rivera is happy with Qatar’s preparations for the IHF Men’s Junior World Championship to be held in Algiers, Algeria, from July 18 to 30.
Qatar played two warm-up matches against Macedonia and also competed in a friendly involving Spain and Tunisia at Duhail Arena, and the renowned Spanish coach was extremely pleased with the performance of his players.
“I’m happy with my team,” Rivera said. “We played two matches against Macedonia. We lost in the first by one goal (24-25), a penalty and won the second by a two-goal margin (25-23). The boys played very well.”
Qatar are in a very tough group also comprising reigning champions France, runners-up Denmark and fourth-placed Egypt, and Rivera, who guided Qatar senior team to a runners-up finish in the World Championship in Doha in 2015, said they would take it step by step.
“It’s a complicated group and all matches are tough. We’ll take it match by match, but I have full confidence in my boys,” said Rivera.
Qatar open their campaign against Sweden on July 18. Then they will take on Slovenia on 19, Denmark on 21, France on 22, before finishing their group engagements with a match against Egypt on July 24.
Qatar need to finish in the top four in the six-team group to earn a place in the last 16. The team will leave for Algiers on July 15.
