World classical champion Magnus Carlsen had an unimpressive outing at the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships, where he failed to defend his rapid title, finishing third, and came second in blitz.
Ukrainian Vassily Ivanchuk won the rapid title and Russian Sergey Karjakin the blitz.
Carlsen was the favourite to defend his title after his recent triumph against Karjakin at the FIDE World Championships (classical) in New York last month, but lack of concentration and tiredness seemed to have hit him hard.
“It wasn’t my best tournament. I messed up things. The basics were correct, but I wasn’t good enough,” said Carlsen.
