THE International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) has opened bids to host the improved 2017 ITTF World Tour.
The revamped and restructured ITTF World Tour will have a new look to make it a much more attractive proposition for host countries and help them promote globally through the sport.
“The tour is a valuable property since 1996. It was time to shake it up to make it more commercially viable for potential hosts. We believe the changes will make the event more successful,” said ITTF President Thomas Weikert.
The Qatar Open, one of the top events in the Tour schedule, has helped the country not only develop the sport, but also increase its visibility on the international stage.
The two-decade-old tournament is the only international competition hosted by the Qatar Table Tennis Association.
The 12 Tour events, which are available for bidding next year, will be divided into two, Platinum and regular events, with the former becoming the new top tier.
The Platinum events will have bigger prize money, the world’s best players. It will also give more mileage to Qatar on the world stage.
