EL JAISH stayed on course for title defence by defeating Lekhwiya 23-21 in the Qatar League.
The winners led 12-8 at the halfway mark in the match played at the Qatar Handball Association Hall last week.
Right-back Zarko Markovic was the star of the show for Jaish. Though he is out of favour with the national team since the World Championship, Markovic continues to be the best player for Jaish, who have been in irresistible form this season.
He received good support from pivot Issam Tej and centre player Kamalaldin Mallash.
It was Jaish’s third win on the trot in the league’s second phase. They top the standings with 10 points.
The Armymen will next take on Al Gharafa on April 12 and a victory or even draw will help them inch closer to the title. Their last match is against Al Rayyan on the concluding day on April 15.
Though title rivals El Quiyada also notched up a victory (29-22 against Al Sadd), their early loss to Jaish is likely to prove costly.
They sit second in the standings with seven points followed by Sadd on five.
