SOUTH Korea’s Kweon Young-Jun beat France’s Jean-Michel Lucenay to claim the men’s epee Grand Prix title at the Aspire Dome last week.
Kweon, who defeated Estonia’s two-time world champion Nikolai Novosjolov 15-13 in the semifinal, replicated the scoreline against Lucenay.
“It’s a great feeling to win a title here. I was surprised to see lots of Korean fans during the final. I was overwhelmed. I thank them for their support,” said the 29-year-old Kweon.
Lucenay, a member of France’s Olympic gold medal-winning men’s team at Rio last August, had overcome compatriot Alexandre Bardenet 15-12 in the other last-four clash.
The losing semifinalists shared the bronze.
Other than Olympics and World Championships, the Grand Prix is the most sought-after event on the FIE calendar in terms of ranking points.
Its next stop, the Mexican city of Cancun, will host sabre competitions from Friday.
