THE law of averages finally caught up with El Jaish as Lekhwiya dethroned them as Emir’s Cup champions last week.
Jaish were eyeing a hat-trick of titles, having won the league and Qatar Cup. But Lekhwiya prevailed 27-24 in over time to deny the Soldiers a clean sweep of major domestic crowns for the second successive season.
The sides were level 22-22 at the end of regulation time.
Lekhwiya defeated Al Rayyan 30-27 and Jaish edged El Quiyada 34-33 in the semifinals.
In the final played at the Qatar Handball Association Complex Hall, Lekhwiya trailed by just one goal (10-11) at the halfway mark.
The pep talk that coach Thabet Mahfouz had with his wards during the break invigorated them as they fought back in the second half.
Former Qatar internationals Hamad Madadi and Yousef Benali did their best to counter Jaish’s formidable duo of Zarko Markovic and Issam Tej.
In over time, the Cops, who are former Asian champions held their nerves while the Armymen lapsed in concentration and paid the penalty for it.
Qatar Handball Association President Ahmed Mohammed Abdulrab Al Shaabi awarded the winners.
