LEKHWIYA held Iran’s Esteghlal Khouzestan 1-1 in their crucial away Group B match in the AFC Champions League at the Ghadir Stadium in Tehran on Tuesday.
Hasan Beytsaeid converted from the spot in the seventh minute to give the hosts a great start, but Ismail Mohammed levelled four minutes later, latching on to a Chico Flores header to give Djamel Belmadi’s side a sigh of relief.
Lekhwiya will miss defender Mohammed Tresor, who picked up his second yellow in stoppage time, when they meet Khouzestan in the next group match on April 10.
The Iranian champions, who are making their maiden appearance in the continental tournament, have two wins and one draw to lead the table with seven points. Lekhwiya are on five and Saudi Arabia’s Al Fateh on four while UAE’s Al Jazira is yet to open their account.
