Dutch paddlers Li Jie and Japan’s Hitomi Sato produced an incredible 766-shot rally in their first-round match at the ITTF World Tour Platinum Qatar Open last week,
It was the longest exchange in a competitive game in the modern era.
Both Li and Sato chose to stick to their chopping styles instead of attacking in the third game.
The rally lasted 10 minutes and 13 seconds before it was interrupted by a ball bouncing into their playing area. That led to a let and they were called to replay the point.
Jie won the replay in just a couple of shots and also the match, which went to the decisive rubber, 10-12, 6-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-9, 3-11, 11-9.
