Doha, Qatar: Lokomotiv Moscow defeated Zenit St. Petersburg in the second match of the Match Premier Cup at Aspire Academy on Tuesday.
Zenit lead the Russian Premier League and have a host of top stars including former Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio in their line up, but it was Lokomotiv all the way at the lush green carpet of a pitch at Aspire.
After Marchisio missed a chance to put Zenit ahead close to the half-hour mark, Lokomotiv scored twice in two minutes — through Russian internationals Fyodor Smolov (35th minute ) and Anton Miranchuk (37th) — to take control of the match.
Though Sergey Semak’s side tried to come back immediately, Lokomotiv goalkeeper Marinato Guilherme denied Zabolotny with a smart save two minutes later while Neto failed to tap the ball home following a Zenit corner, also in the first half.
Lokomotiv coach Yuri Semin changed his entire team in the second half but they continued to enjoy the upper hand and in the 51st minute midfielder Alexey Mirnonv put the issue beyond doubt with a screamer.
Though substitute Emiliano Rigoni found the net for Zenit in the 82nd, it was nothing more than a mere consolation.
Earlier in the opening match on Monday, Spartak Moscow defeated FC Rostov 2-1.
On Friday, Zenit face Spartak Moscow in the first match at 6.30 pm while Rostov and Lokomotiv clash at 9:30 pm. The matches will take place on Aspire Academy pitch 5 and the entry is free.
