QATAR Olympic Committee (QOC) Secretary General Dr Thani Abdulrahman Al Kuwari was elected unopposed as the new president of Qatar Athletics Federation (QAF) at its General Assembly held last week.
He succeeded Dahlan Al Hamad, who did not seek re-election after completing his four-year term. Dahlan is currently one of the vice-presidents of global governing body IAAF and also heads the Asian federation.
Al Kuwari’s immediate task will be to oversee the preparations for 2019 World Championships.
Al Kuwari was the Organising Committee Director General of the Men’s Handball World Championship which Qatar hosted in January, 2015. He became the QOC secretary general in May that year.
It was also under his able leadership that Qatar hosted the Road World Cycling Championships in October this year.
“It’s an honour for me to take over as the chief of QAF. I thank you all for entrusting me with this huge responsibility. Hosting the 2019 World Championships in Doha will be a major challenge. We’ll relish it and do our best to get the desired results,” said Al Kuwari.
Meanwhile, Mohammed Al Fadalah, who was Qatar’s Chef de Mission at the Rio Olympics, replaced Mohammed Jassim Al Kuwari as the general secretary while former sprint star Talal Mansour was elected as assistant general secretary.
Khalifa Abdulmalik, Khalid Al Marri and Talal were elected as members of the re-constituted QAF Board in the elections, supervised by QOC Sport Affairs Director Khaleel Al Jabir.
