Jiayuguan, China: Qatar’s Nasser Saleh al Attiyah continued his unstoppable run in the Silk Way Rally as he took his eighth consecutive stage win in the gruelling event.
In the a fast and beautiful 500 kilometre drive from Alashan to Jiayuguan that also featured a 290 kilometre special section , Al Attiyah (Toyota Gazoo Racing Overdrive), though a bit tired, was always in control and finished 9 minutes and 12 seconds ahead of Han Wei (Buggy Geely SMG) and Eric Van Loon (Toyota Hilux Overdrive).
Mathieu Serradori (Buggy CR6 SRT) pushed too hard in his attempt to give al Attiyah a fight but the driver from the South of France hit a rock and tore off a wheel 50 kilometres from the finish.
Al Attiyah and co-driver Mathieu Baumel now have a 70-minute advantage in the overall standings and the three-time Dakar winner said he was looking to finish off in style on Tuesday.
“It was a very difficult stage today. I have raced many Dakars but I have never known such an exhausting special. Like yesterday it was very interesting, but the body, already tired, was really tested today. There’s only one stage left now to finish this Silk Way Rally in style,” said Al Attiyah.
