QATAR’S top pair of Jefferson Pereira and Cherif Younousse failed to reach the knockout phase of FIVB World Tour Moscow Open despite putting up a good fight.
The Qatar duo lost to Italy’s Daniele Lupo/Paolo Nicolai 28-26, 18-21, 19-21 in a hard-fought opening-round game at the Vodny Stadium Beach Sports Centre.
They then lost 15-21, 21-23 to America’s Stafford Slick and William Allen in the second tie to bow out of the competition.
Qatar’s second pair of Ahmed Tijan and Julio Cesar Jr could not even enter the main draw.
In the qualifying rounds, they went down 15-21, 21-23 to America’s Stafford Slick and William Allen.
It was the first time that Qatar failed to reach the knockout round of an FIVB event since new coach Mariano Baracetti took charge in February.
The next stop on the FIVB World Tour for Team Qatar is the $150,000 prize-money ‘three star’ event to be held at Hague in the Netherlands from June 15 to 18.
That will be the final tune-up event for Qatar who are set to compete at the World Championship to be held in Vienna, Austria in July. dsp
