AS THE new MotoGP season begins in Qatar on March 26, teams are busy making sure that they leave no stone unturned and the final round of winter tests will be held at the Losail International Circuit from Friday to Sunday.
As has been the case in previous years, the first round was held at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia (January 30-February 1) and second at Phillip Island, Australia (February 15-17).
In addition to it, teams, like Repsol Honda for whom world champion Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa compete, did their own private tests at Jerez, Spain last week.
Only the MotoGP riders will be seen in action at 5.3km Losail circuit as Moto2 and Moto3 competitors will have tests on the same days at Jerez. However, they will be in Losail from March 17 to 19 for the final testing.
Former rider Loris Capirossi, currently the Safety Advisor to Dorna Sports which is the commercial rights holder of MotoGP, said, “Unlike Malaysia and Australia, riders can test in conditions similar to those they’ll experience in the Qatar race — at night, under the floodlights.”
The Italian, a former 125 and 250cc world champion, described pre-season tests as one of the most eagerly-awaited events.
“After the off-season, it’s back to hard work. The riders are always happy to be back on the bike,” Capirossi added.
