Doha: David Nichols of Carbon Wheels Racing won the Open/Elite class of the Al Kheesa XCO — first event of the five-race Mountain Bike event — in Al Kheesa trail.
The competition was organised by United Filipino Mountain Bikers Qatar (UFMBQ) and Qatar Cycling and Triathlon Federation (QCTF) in partnership with Rayyan Water. Qatar Chain Reaction provided the chip timing system.
Nichols clocked 1:19:04 to finish ahead of team-mate Davy Muller (1:22:11). Carla Pregigueiro emerged winner in the ladies class with an impressive 0:52:52.
The course is a dry terrain mix of flats, sand pits, natural and artificial obstacles, inclines, and descents with a one lap distance is equivalent to five kilometres.
Riders from the Open category endured a gruelling six laps of the route while the age-category riders and ladies category completed three laps and beginner completed one lap.
Due to the heat and with technical features of the course, it was a tough event with only 107 riders finishing and the other 19 abandoned the race.
With the sport’s rising popularity, QCTF organised the first-ever Qatar Mountain Bike League in partnership with UFMBQ as the federation hopes to develop the sport.
The league is a series of five Mountain Bike Races showcasing the local off-road cycling tracks of Al Kheesa, Al Khor, Duhail, Lusail and Al Wakrah.
