Qatar Emir leads National Sport Day celebrations

DOHA: Qatar celebrated the National Sport Day (NSD) on Tuesday with HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, HH Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani and visiting FIFA President Gianni Infantino led the show by taking part in a football match with Aspire Academy students at the Football Performance Center.

Besides, several organisations, federations and public and private companies also organised multiple sports events to mark the NSD's seventh edition.  

The NSD was implemented vide Emiri Decision No. 80 of 2011, which stipulates that the second Tuesday of February every year shall be a sport day for the state in order to encourage everyone to participate in sporting activities.

This year’s edition was particularly remarkable as it came after the country won the 2019 Asian Cup in the UAE.

The NSD Committee organised multiple events launched by the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Qatar Sports For All Federation (QSFA) including a number of innovative events such as fun race or balloon race at Al Bidda Park along with special events at Aspire Zone, Katara and the Corniche.

In addition, all Qatari clubs and public and private sector entities organized events to mark the sport day.

The day is a unique initiative which is dedicated to highlighting the importance of sport in the lives of people.

The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) celebrated the day in co-operation with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education at Al Yarmouk Preparatory School for Boys with the participation of sports federations, families and children.

The QOC, through its federations, hosted a number of events and activities for all categories and ages.

Weightlifting, boxing, wrestling, table tennis, taekwondo, judo, golf, aquathlon, volleyball events at Katara while the Qatar Tennis, Squash and Badminton Federation organized tennis games for all categories.

A fencing game was held at the Qatar Mall and the MIA Park.

The Qatar Athletics Federation, in co-operation with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, hosted competitions for children aged 8-12 while the Qatar Women's Sports Committee (QWSC) organised various activities including mini games for children aged 5 to 13 in co-operation with Kahramaa.
