DOHA: The 2019-20 Qatar Stars League (QSL) was formally launched here on Monday in the presence of several top QSL officials and other stakeholders including the representatives from the clubs.
The league, which starts on Wednesday, will see the defending champions Al Sadd kick off their campaign against promoted side Al Wakrah on the opening day.
The QSL has issued the schedule for the first phase of the new season, with the first five rounds will be played at Al Janoub Stadium (Al Wakrah) and Al Sadd Stadium where matches will be staged with cooling technology.
The early start to the season was planned due to the hectic schedule in Qatar where the 24th Gulf Cup (November 27-December 9) and the FIFA Club World Cup (December 11-22) will be held this year.
The venues for the remaining rounds will be determined after coordination with the Ministry of Culture and Sports following periodic maintenance of the stadiums.
This year’s competition will also see former Barcelona great Xavi Hernandez at the Al Sadd dugout as the team manager though the former midfield general had already guided the team to the AFC Champions League quarterfinals last week.
Qatar’s own prolific scorer and Al Duhail’s Almoez Ali will be one of the stars who will hope to do well as he did with the national team’s success at the AFC Asian Cup in the UAE early this year.
