Gifu, Japan: Qatar finished sixth overall, with three gold and as many silver medals, at the Asian Junior Athletics Championships in Gifu, Japan, Sunday.
Saife Saifeldin was the star of the show for Qatar, winning a golden double in 1500M and 3000M steeplechase.
In steeplechase, Saifeldin clocked 8mins 51.97secs to finish well ahead of Takumi Yoshida of Japan (8:52.79) and Trung Cuong Nguyen of Vietnam (8:59.32).
Saifeldin was equally impressive in 1,500M finishing in 3min 49.30sec. Japan’s Reito Hanzawa took silver in 3:49.66 and Iraq’s Hussein Lafta claimed the bronze in 3:49.75.
Ibrahim Moaaz Mohamed won Qatar’s other gold, in shotput, with a throw of 18.57.
It was the second medal for Moaaz, who also won a silver in discus throw (61.50).
Bassem Hemeida won silver in 400M hurdles clocking 50.55 to finish behind Japan’s Yusuke Shirao 50.52. Mahdi Pirjahan of Iran took bronze in 51.18.
High jumper Nuh Anuh claimed Qatar’s other silver with an effort of 2.14M. Japan’s Kyohei Tyomori won gold (2.16) while Zhang Hao of China took bronze. 2.12.
Hosts Japan finished atop the standings with 14 gold 15 silver and 12 bronze. China came second with 11 gold eight silver and five bronze while India, with five gold two silver and 10 bronze, was third.
