Doha, Qatar: Qatar’s high jump sensation Mutaz Essa Barshim made a winning return from an 11- month injury layoff after snatching gold at the Sopot Grand Prix in Poland on Sunday.
With the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha just three months away, Barshim’s return to form after suffering an ankle injury last July is great news for Qatar, as the 27-year-old is widely expected to retain his world title at home turf.
While Barshim cleared 2.27m, Malaysia’s Nauraj Singh Randhawa took silver with a 2.24m effort, and Vadym Kravchuk of Ukraine claimed the bronze (2.21m).
“I just want thank God, my family and friends, everyone who believed in me,” Barshim posted on his Instagram account.
“Been to really difficult times and to be honest I was not sure if I was ever going to be able to jump again but I believe everything happens for a reason.
“2019 officially starts... Happy with that start now back to work #Doha2019.”
