COACH Toni Gerona has played a big role in making El Jaish what they are now.
Joining the team at the beginning of 2015-16 season, the Spaniard transformed the Armymen from a group of underachievers into a champion outfit.
In his maiden season, he oversaw the team making a clean sweep of domestic titles — League, Qatar Cup and Emir’s Cup.
Going by the current form, Jaish look well set to do an encore and Gerona said it was a realistic target.
“Yes, to do a treble in two successive years would be great. I think this team is capable of doing it,” said Gerona.
Under the former Barcelona youth coach, pivot Issam Tej, goalkeeper Berzad Demirovic and left-back Hassan Mabrouk have all made giant strides as Jaish became an all-round side.
“Luckily, I had a good squad at my disposal. It was all about making them play well as a cohesive unit. I did just that,” Gerona added.
Just like the players, Gerona’s future is also in doubt following the decision to merge Jaish and Lekhwiya.
But the coach did not seem to be unduly worried about it.
“We haven’t been informed anything till now. Our job is to concentrate on the matches ahead. The season isn’t over yet. The Qatar Cup is starting on Wednesday. And after that, the season-ending Emir’s Cup.
It would be great if we can end the season on a high with three titles just like last year,” he concluded.
