FORMER champions Lekhwiya defeated El Jaish 2-1 on Tuesday to end the Soldiers’ unbeaten run and cut their gap atop the Qatar Stars League football standings to one point.
Jaish defender Lucas Mendes would want to forget the 10th-round match in a hurry as he deflected a Youssef Msakni shot into his own net and scored an own goal. The Brazilian was the hero in their last-gasp win over Al Kharaitiyat last week, as he drilled home a free-kick in their 1-0 win.
Lekhwiya took the lead in the 70th minute as Msakni’s deflected shot sneaked in, but Jaish equalised through Romarinho a minute later. However, Lucas’ poor display swung the match in favour of the Cops, who scored the winner in the 81st and increased their tally to 24 points, one behind Jaish.
Meanwhile, Al Sailiya, who are having a miserable season, collected full points with a 1-0 win over newcomers Muaither, courtesy of a Sayaf Al Korbi goal in the 34th minute.
Al Arabi beat Al Shahaniya 2-1 for only their third win. Luis Jimenez (48th) and Imoh Ezekiel (73rd) scored for the winners while Fahad Khalfan pulled one back in the 90th.
Al Kharaitiyat held Al Ahli 1-1.
Meshaal Abdullah headed home to give Ahli the lead in the 18th, but John Benson scored an own goal in the 82nd to give strugglers Kharaitiyat a point.
