LED by Chinese professional Wu Hao, Al Sadd will hope to retain the Emir’s Cup, which starts on Wednesday.
Four-time champions Sadd are clubbed with Al Rayyan, Qatar SC, Al Khor and Ahli in Group A. Qatar SC take on Khor and Ahli meet Rayyan in the opening matches while Sadd’s first test is against Rayyan on Friday.
Al Arabi, El Jaish, Al Wakrah, Al Gharafa and Al Shamal comprise Group B.
Coached by Hungarian Ferenc Fischer, Sadd are one of the most successful sides in the tournament’s history having played in all finals since 2006-07.
Besides Wu, Waleed Nasser, Ahmed Muthanna, Abdulrahman Al Najjar, Jassim Al Sanadi and Salah Al Sanadi are the other members of the squad.
“All teams are tough, but we’ll try to retain the title,” said Fischer.
