AL SHAMAL shocked holders Al Rayyan 89-80 in their Qatar League match at the Al Gharafa Stadium Indoor Hall last week.
Shamal matched their fancied opponents in all departments and were more confident when it mattered the most as the lead changed hands seven times.
Mohammed Harat and Saleh Ali were the star performers for Shamal, scoring 26 and 25 points respectively while Abdul Qadir Kosar (16) and Ahmad Youssif (12) also chipped in.
Shamal led 25-23, 47-40 and 64-60 after the first three quarters.
For Rayyan, Marcus Bell had a double-double of 30 points and 16 rebounds. Mohamed Hassan Mohamed (26) and Abdelrahman Abdelhaleem (10) were the other main scorers.
Meanwhile, leaders El Jaish started the second phase on a dominant note, beating Al Khor 93-57 to stretch their unbeaten run to 10 matches.
Erfan Ali Saeed scored 18 points, which included two three-pointers.
Vernon Leon Macklin (15), Dominic James Davon (14), Mohammed Yousuf Mohammed (13) and Mansour Atif Elhadary (10) also managed double digits.
Jaish, who scored 50 points to their rivals’ 28 in the paint, had an impressive 18-0 run which increased their lead to 44-20 in the second quarter. They closed out the match with their biggest lead of 36 points.
For Khor, Rickey Young scored a match-high 32 points and Dairese Gary netted 13.
