Doha: Veteran Al Rayyan forward Sebastian Soria showed oncce again that age is just a number when he scored one and assisted two in his team's 3-2 win over Al Gharafa in a ninth round match of the QNB Stars League at the Khalifa International Stadium here on Saturday.
The former Qatar international earned a penalty when he was fouled inside the box while Abderrazak Hamdallah converted from the spot in the ninth minute to give his side the lead.
The 34-year-old then set him up with a neat flick for the second goal as the Moroccan drilled the ball home with an effortless calm in the 31st.
Soria scored his seventh goal this season when he headed home a corner in the 64th minute as the 2015-16 winners came close to notch up their eighth victory.
“I’m satisfied with Rayyan’s superiority. We played attacking football and which was good. We’re in second, but it’s a long way to go,” said Rayyan coach Michael Laudrup.
Gharafa, who suffered their fourth defeat in the competition, pulled one back 10 minutes later when Rayyan back-line failed to clear Jiminez corner and Almahdi Al Mukhtar shot home from close.
Though Vladimir Weiss’s brilliant effort in the injury time helped Gharafa reduce the margin, it was not enough to save them from yet another loss. Even the late fightback may not have given Gharafa coach Jean Fernandez a great feeling as the former champions ended the week on ninth with just seven points.
