HEBA Allejji will create history at Rio by becoming the first ever Syrian to play in an Olympic table tennis event after being awarded a special place in the competition.

The International Table Tennis Federation announced the tripartite spots in the men’s and women’s competitions, giving the 19-year-old an Olympic debut.

The tripartite places are given to athletes from National Olympic Committees that had an average of fewer than eight athletes at the past two Olympics.

The 667th-ranked player represented Syria at this year’s Asia Olympic Qualification Tournament, World Tour Qatar Open and last year’s Asian Junior Championships.
