Doha: Rodrigo Tabata scored a second-half equaliser as Al Rayyan pulled off a 1-1 draw against Umm Salal in the Qatar Stars League at Al Sadd Stadium here on Friday.
Yannick Sagbo had put the oranges into the lead in the 16th minute following a clinical finish after the Ivorian international picked up a lob and evaded Mowafak Awad and Musa Haroon before slipping a ball past goalkeeper.
“I'm not happy with the result. We have to handle the mistakes. We didn’t had a good start,” said Rayyan’s Argentinian coach Rodolfo Arruabarrena.
Umm Salal, who are yet to win in the tournament, failed to maintain momentum after the first half and allowed the Sheikh Jassim Cup champions to dominate.
Abdulrahman Al Korbi came close to level the score, but his powerful 40-yard effort narrowly missed the target.
After repeated attempts, Rayyan finally found success after Tabata headed home a looping cross from Sebastian Soria in the 75th minute. Though Mahmoud Mawas made a last ditch attempt to flick the ball away, the header had already clearly crossed the goalline.
Al Ahli notch up first win
In another match, Ahli picked up their first three points in the tournament with a 2-0 win over Qatar SC.
Ali Fereydoun was the toast of their victory, scoring a double in the 10th and 76th minutes respectively as Ahli, who had lost to Rayyan in the first round, should be happy with their performance.
Fereydoun was in great form as his speed and finishing touches had Qatar SC in trouble.
He scored his first after dribbling past the defenders and then executed with a smart finish past goalkeeper Jassim Al Hail.
Fereydoun then doubled the lead with a strong header off a cross from Mohsin Al Yazeedi.
