Salou, Spain: Estonia's Ott Tanak of Toyota charged past his world championships title rivals Friday to lead the Catalan Rally.
He moved up from third place to take the lead by 11 seconds from Elfyn Evans of Ford with Spain's Dani Sordo of Hyundai third 19 seconds adrift.
Five-time world champion Sebastien Ogier won Thursday's opening special ahead of Thierry Neuville, who can wrap up the title in Barcelona with a single date on the calendar remaining in Australia in mid-November.
But both of them suffered in the early action Friday with Ogier fifth at 24sec and the Belgian eighth at 37sec.
Nine-time world champion Sebastien Loeb of Citroen who is taking part in a limited number of rallies this season was sixth, some 27 seconds behind Tanak.
Sebastien Ogier won the last rally in Wales with Tanak winning the previous three.
Neuville has 189 points so far with Ogier on 182 and Tanak on 168.
