Doha: Doha: Umm Salal entered the QSL Cup semifinals on Tuesday after a 3-0 victory against Al Markhiya in their last group match helped them finish ahead of Al Ahli on goal difference.
Abdulaziz Mohammed (31st minute), Mahmoud Al Mawas (74) and Yannick Sagbo (76) scored for the winners.
Umm Salal, Ahli, Markhiya and Al Arabi were all on five points after four rounds of matches and plenty of excitement was on offer on the final matchday. While Arabi played out a goalless draw against runaway leaders Al Rayyan who had already booked their berth as group leaders, Ahli defeated Al Sadd 3-2 in the other match.
While Umm Salal’s victory took their goal difference to three, Ahli had to be satisfied with a third-place finish after conceding eight goals, the same number they scored.
Arabi finished on six points, Markhiya on five and Sadd, who fielded their Under-23 team throughout the tournament, failed to open their account.
Umm Salal will take on Group A winners Al Gharafa in the first semifinal on December 16 while Rayyan take on Al Kharaitiyat.
