Athens, Greece: A 55-year-old construction worker fell to his death on Wednesday while working on the new AEK Athens stadium, the Greek Super League club confirmed.
“We express our deep sorrow and sincere condolences to the family of the deceased worker. At the moment the causes of the accident are being investigated,” an announcement by the outfit said.
According to the Athens Construction Workers’ Union the victim fell from scaffolding at a height of 20 meters and was killed instantly.
The union said another worker was seriously injured on the site last month.
Work was halted on the construction site in the Athens suburb of Nea Philadelphia until further notice.
The stadium broke ground on July 28, 2017 and is expected to be ready next year at a cost of 80.7 million euros and will have a capacity of 30,528.
