Doha, Qatar: Qatar’s Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan moved into the eliminator of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Katara Cup 2019 after losing to Americans Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena in their second pool match at the Katara Cultural Village Amphitheatre on Wednesday.
Younousse and Tijan had beaten cruised past Omani newcomers Nouh al-Jalbubi and Mazin al-Hashmi 21-13, 21-16 and that victory proved enough for them to progress to the elimination round while Dalhausser and Lucena, who beat the top Qatari pair 13-21, 21-17, 15-9 entered the second knock out round.
Qatar’s second pair of Tamer Abdelrasoul and Assam Mahmoud lost both their matches in Pool B and bowed out. They first suffered a 12-21, 16-21 defeat at the hands of second seeds Michal Bryl and Grzegorz Fijalek from Poland. Then they went down to Chilean Gramalt cousins Esteban and Marco in straight sets at 8-21, 16-21.
In the other main round action, 11 FIVB World Beach Tour titles holder Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins, the third seeds from Latvia, failed to register any win in Pool C and bowed out.
